What is your core activity?
The core of our work is research into spiritual dynamics in society, including hidden influences, and teaching the resulting insights to churches and intercessors, focussing on Reconciliation and Transformation of nations and cities. Our goal is to equip the church for its end-time spiritual responsibility towards its city or nation.
For example: just as we individually must confess our sins if we wish to belong to Jesus, so must a nation. We or our nation cannot postpone that until after He returns.

How long have you been doing this?
For over twenty years now. It started during our time with YWAM-Amsterdam, organising prayer conferences (1984-’85) and initiating the Amsterdam City Prayer (1986). In 1988 he felt led to call a, first ever, European prayer leaders conference. Throughout the nineties he was a national and European prayer leader and Helene an intercessor for international matters. In 1996 she started to visit UN(-related) conferences. Till 1998, when Serving the Nations was established, we had already ministered in 40 nations, since then in 55, on all continents.

Why are you so often away from home?
We are connected to intercessors and intercessory organizations on a national scale, and even more on the international scale, both through friendships and organization. We travel about one week a month, sometimes by invitation to teach, usually at interdenominational conferences. Sometimes we take the initiative to go and pray somewhere. We often participate in the organization of international prayer journeys. A prayer journey is undertaken to learn on the spot how to pray for the topic with which that place is connected.

Who is paying for all those trips?
If we are invited to an affluent country, they pay our travelling expenses, and usually a remuneration also. For all other trips, and for all our living expenses, the Lord provides gifts, and has done so since 1983. That is how we brought up our children and travelled all over the world. Very adventurous, but that goes for the whole of life with God.

Do you belong to an organization? Is the work supported by a denomination?
In the Netherlands we belong to an evangelical church; our work though is covered by an independent foundation. Our board and our contacts belong to various denominations, including ‘traditional’ churches. When we are invited somewhere, depending on circumstances, we often even make it a condition that the event is interdenominational.

Do you each have your own tasks, or do you share the work together?
We like travelling together and then dividing the tasks, both teaching and leading prayer. But sometimes Pieter travels by himself, e.g. to teach at a YWAM school somewhere in Europe. And sometimes Helene goes on her own, especially in the case of prayer journeys to UN and G8 conferences, often taking a prayer partner. The strategic meetings have originally grown around Pieter’s work, but we are aiming to change that; we prefer going together.

How did you find out about all those things going on internationally and in the UN?
Helene has a certain ‘spiritual inquisitiveness,’ and Pieter a spiritual overview, and both of us are always pioneering behind the next horizon. Besides, God really wants us to know these things, and pass them on! He wants us all personally to be saved, but certainly also all nations! The Church is meant to be international: neither Jew nor Greek, neither barbarian nor Scythian. The gospel makes a curious believer to become international, and the Church to become global.

Do you hold a “Latter Rain Theology” or a “Post-tribulation theology”?
The Bible has much to say about the future and of course that shapes our expectations, but that is not the focus of our work. If Jesus repeatedly tells us to be alert, He is not emphasizing the future and speculations about what will happen, but our alertness and readiness NOW, an attitude of expectancy for what He is foretelling. Our emphasis is on our national responsibility as Church NOW. We sense that the return of Jesus is in the near future, and that a persecution may well be necessary to prepare the Church for that.

If the Bible tells us there will be an antichrist and persecution, what is the use of praying against these things?
We do not pray against what the Bible prophesies. But at this moment, the movement towards a one-world government is unashamedly and aggressively advancing, while the Church has neither the perception nor the unity nor the authority needed to fulfil its role. In other words: we believe the world is anticipating on God’s plans, and the Church is lagging behind. That is why we are alerting the Church to her responsibility.

Wat is eigenlijk de kern van jullie werk?
De kern van ons werk is onderzoek naar geestelijke dynamieken in en achter de maatschappij, en het daarover onderwijs geven in kerken en aan voorbidders, gericht op Verzoening en Transformatie of naties en steden, om de kerk toe te rusten voor haar taak om geestelijk verantwoordelijkheid te nemen voor haar natie of land.
Bijvoorbeeld: zoals wij onze schuld moeten belijden als we Jezus willen toebehoren, zo ook een natie, en wij of ons natie kunnen dat niet uitstellen tot nadat Hij komt.

Hoe lang doen jullie dit werk al?
Al meer dan twintig jaar. Het begon gedurende onze tijd bij JmeO-Amsterdam, toen Pieter twee keer een gebedsconferentie organiseerde (1984-’85) en het Stadsgebed Amsterdam City Prayer (1986). In 1988 werd hij geleid om (eerste) Europese gebedsleiders conferentie bijeen te reopen. Gedurende de 90’er jaren was hij national en Europees gebedsleider en Helene voorbidster voor internationale dynamieken. In 1996 ‘begon zij UN(-gerelateeerde) conferenties te bezoeken. Tot 1998, toen Serving the Nations werd opgericht, hadden we al gediend in meer dan 40 naties, sindsdien in 55, op all continenten.

Waarom zijn jullie zo vaak op reis?
We zijn nationaal en meer nog internationaal goed verbonden met voorbidders (-organisaties), zowel vriendschappelijk als organisatorisch. We reizen gemiddeld ongeveer een week per maand, soms op uitnodiging, om les te geven, meest op interkerkelijke conferenties; soms gaan we op eigen initiatief, om ergens te gaan bidden. Vaak zijn we organisatorisch betrokken in internationale gebedsreizen. Een gebedsreis onderneem je om ter plekke te leren hoe je voor het onderwerp van die plek moet bidden.

Wie betaalt al dat reizen?
Als we worden uitgenodigd naar een land waar men het kan betalen, wordt de reis door hen betaald, en meest ook een honorarium. In de financien voor alle overige reizen, en in al alle onkosten en kosten van levensonderhoud voorziet de Heer door giften, al sinds 1983. Zo hebben we onze kinderen opgevoed en de hele wereld rond gereisd. Heel avontuurlijk, maar zo is het hele leven met God.

Horen jullie bij een organisatie? Gaat het werk uit van een denominatie?
We zijn in Nederland lid van een evangelische gemeente, maar ons werk valt onder een zelfstandige stichting. Ons bestuur en onze werkrelaties zijn interkerkelijk, inclusief “traditionele” kerken. Als we ergens worden uitgenodigd maken we het soms zelfs, afhankelijk van de situatie, een voorwaarde dat de opzet interkerkelijk is.

Hebben jullie een werkverdeling, of doen jullie alles samen?
We reizen graag samen en verdelen dan het werk, zowel het onderwijs geven als het gebed leiden. Maar soms gaat Pieter alleen, bijvoorbeeld een week les geven op een JmeO-school ergens in Europa. En soms gaat Helene alleen, met name de gebedsreizen naar VN en G8 conferenties. De strategische bijeenkomsten zijn aanvankelijk rondom Pieter gegroeid, maar daar proberen we verandering in te brengen, daar gaan we het liefst samen naar toe.

Hoe komen jullie aan die kennis van wat er internationaal en in de VN omgaat?
Helene heeft een soort “geestelijke nieuwsgierigheid,” Pieter een groot abstractievermogen, en we zijn allebei altijd pionierend achter de volgende horizon. God wil echt dat we deze dingen ontdekken, en ze doorgeven! Het gaat God wel om het persoonlijke zieleheil, maar echt niet minder om het heil voor de volken! De Gemeente is ook bedoeld om internationaal te zijn: noch Jood, noch Griek, noch barbaar noch Scyth. Het evangelie maakt een nieuwsgierige gelovige internationaal, de Gemeente mondiaal!

Hebben jullie een soort “Grote Opwekking theologie” of van een bepaalde “wederkomst theologie”?
De bijbel zegt veel over de toekomst en dat geeft natuurlijk een bepaalde verwachting, maar daar ligt niet de nadruk op. Als Jezus bij herhaling zegt: weest waakzaam, dan ligt de nadruk niet op de toekomst en het speculeren daarover, maar op je oplettendheid NU en gereedheid NU, een houding van verwachting van wat Hij voorzegt. We leggen de nadruk op onze nationale verantwoordelijkheid als Gemeente NU. We verwachten de wederkomst van Jezus in de nabije toekomst, en we geloven dat een vervolging nodig zal zijn om de Gemeente daarop voor te bereiden.

Als alles over de antichrist en de vervolging toch in de bijbel staat, waarom er dan tegen in bidden?
We bidden niet in tegen wat in de bijbel wordt aangekondigd. Maar op ’t ogenblik is de één-wereldregering onbeschaamd en agressief in opmars, terwijl de Gemeente noch de eenheid noch de autoriteit heeft om haar rol in deze tijd te vervullen. Anders gezegd: onze overtuiging is dat de wereld vóór is op Gods plan, en de Gemeente achter. Daarom wekken we de Gemeente op haar verantwoordelijkheid op zich te nemen.
